Two Magi

Two magi at the river’s edge

One laughs at the sparrows overhead

and the message they carry on their wings

The other listens and obeys

and the night comes swiftly out of the valley

long against walls built to keep it out

washing as ink and wine against the stone

troubled waters casting broken reflections

of the magi, one breathing fire

the other consuming it

Together carving scars into the riverbank

to outlive the wind and rain

the storms out of hellscape lands to the north

the slow march of ocean and desert

the molten veins of deep magic

and the hollow burning of their own fire

Anyone reading a good book during quarantine? Watching any good movies? I saw Tootsie (1982) tonight for the first time. Felt great to laugh as hard as it made me.

  1. I spend most of my time either working from home or trying to fight off suddenly worsening depression and hopelessness, so I haven’t been reading other than work-related things. But I’ve been writing and posting here again after I took a hiatus of several weeks in February and March.

      • Thank you! 🙂 I’m working on the next one right now, but it might be a while… I have to make some decisions about what to include or not and how it will affect the future direction of the story.

I had known for a while that my next post was going to be about the time we brought my cousins to Jeromeville, but I didn’t think until I was in the middle of writing it how it was kind of timely. That summer, I felt like my life back home working at the bookstore was boring and tedious, and I couldn’t wait to get back to Jeromeville where all my friends were. That’s kind of how I feel right now with being locked down… working from home and not getting to interact with people is tedious. I feel like it’s worse now, though, because at least the summer of 1995 I had an end date. I knew before the summer started that I could move back to Jeromeville any time after the lease on my apartment began. The lack of an end date is what makes this so frustrating, especially when there has been talk of a lot of events being canceled for the rest of 2020 and possibly even later. This weekend is going to be hard, because I was supposed to be going to Jeromeville for Spring Picnic (see the April 22, 1995 post) was supposed to be this weekend, but of course that has been canceled. Spring Picnic is one of my favorite days of the year.

  2. Sounds like a fantasy fiction poem, my favourite genre of reading. I have been rewatching ‘Rectified’ on Netflix, my all-time favourite series as well as season three of Ozark. I am a big Justin Bateman fan.

  3. Tootsie is a GREAT movie! I read The Boatman’s Daughter by Andy Davidson which made me think that where the story takes place, they would have NO IDEA there was a pandemic or a quarantine. Dear Husband and I watched The Invention of Lying. It was good for a few laughs, oh, and Horns.

  4. This is beautifully written! I’ve been mostly watching documentaries, so this hasn’t exactly changed my viewing habits. Just watching a hell of a lot more of them!
