Mechanical Soul

Slip into the groove carved by glaciers before you

and let the same song play out again and again and again

echoed off the marble streets of this promenade

the slow walk, the leisure stroll into abyss

Familiar is the song of comfort and decay

carried in hearts locked away in an iron music box

slowly winding down to a still, silent rest

and new longing for a hand on the gears

an ear to listen to this mechanical soul

to turn the handle and breathe life into the dead and waiting

Been thinking more and more about buying land deep in the woods somewhere, building a yurt, and then just staying there and writing as much as I can.

  1. Beautiful poem Mitch. I think of a music box when I was tiny my father brought back for me when he had served overseas. Lots of memories. We have also been thinking about doing the same thing. I truly believe that in 3 years you will not be able to buy land to get away from all the craziness unless you are a millionaire. Just my thoughts. Have a blessed day my friend. Great piece my friend. Love 💕 Joni

    • Thank you Susan! It makes me so happy to know that you enjoy them (: I’ve thought a few times about recording myself reading some of my poems and putting them up on the blog. I may try that out some time!

  2. Great poem.
I have a small hexagonal timber yurt that was meant to be, amongst other things, my writing place. I painted it blue and gold inside – I know that sounds tacky, but it feels like being inside a chocolate box. Not quite a music box, but that would be full of gears. 🙂
You just need to decide what you want, and what you’re prepared to give up for it. I knocked back a much better paying job in Sydney to live in the bush with no visible neighbours an hour out of Canberra. I have never regretted that decision. I do regret letting the kids take over the yurt.
Don’t give up on a yurt in the forest if it’s what you want.
I really enjoy reading your poetry.
