Circles

Real quick, before the poem: I’m currently taking a graduate course on survey methods, part of which involves surveying actual people. If you can spare a few minutes, I would really appreciate if you could fill out the survey I made. It should only take a couple of minutes, and will ask about the trust you place in various forms of news media. Data gathered will remain totally anonymous, and I’ll only use it for class assignments. Thanks in advance to anyone who takes it! Here is the link to the form.

Scorched wood where the candles burned

heavy the air and shadow

traces of sage and eucalyptus

behind the door closed on this empty room

The chariots are gone away

on roads over little white flowers

trampled where they fell

and blown by the breath of crescent moons

One step toward the black edged door

and the waiting pulse behind

the night lies still

Trace circles in the wood again and again

and the same will come

to watch the work of bloody fingers

shuffling the red deck once more

  1. I don’t know how old you are but you show a sense of maturity in your writing. Good luck on your studies! As a retired English teacher that didn’t get my BA until I was 49 and start teaching when I was 51, I encourage everybody to go as far as they can when getting an education. I took your survey. I hope you get good results!

  3. 🤣🤣 Fox. That’s funny. I mean, they are supposedly less liberal but… no better with honesty. They just spin it their own way. Exactly like the more liberal ones. But yeah, I’m sure it’s easier to just go with the couple names. I certainly do not consider any of those actual real news sources.

  4. Filled in the form, although I answered it from a British point of view and don’t know a lot about the networks provided. Although Fox does have a bad representation from what I gather.

    • Thank you! I appreciate it. Wow, yeah, I guess I didn’t realize how centralized it is. I guess I don’t know much of anything about news in other countries. Good thing it’s not for real research! I’m curious–does Great Britain also have a divide in news sources based on political affiliations? Thanks again for filling it out (:

      • No problem, you’re welcome.

        Yes we do, there’s a rivalry between Sky News and BBC news, for example. Although the BBC seems to be accused of being “Leftist” (Liberal) in its approach, it was quite interesting to see that it’s coverage of the Tory party (Conservative) was actually more dominant. Although the rivalry there is more one of preference.

        The REAL divide comes from our newspapers. All the red tops (Daily Mirror, Daily Express, The Sun, etc) are seen as far right (Nationalist), the Telegraph, and the Times are seen as Conservative and for the middle classes, whereas The Guardian, i (yes, there’s a paper called “I”), The Conversation are seen as “Bleeding heart leftist”. The problem is that they all serve a political agenda (depending on who they’re trying to appeal towards) and the truth is somewhere in the middle. Both my wife and I tend to read various articles from all of them from the internet, but we do so in order to create a fuller opinion given the different reports. Almost everyone knows that news sources from Facebook and other social media can’t be trusted (as they are paid by corporations for spin) but people still can’t resist the click bait. Hope that gives more info! 😉

      • Thanks so much for the info! It’s a bit overwhelming to try and grapple with the sheer number of different voices in media all vying for our attention, and all with a reality of their own to tell of.
