We’ll Be Back

In another life with glasses raised

and fire in our throats to keep us warm through the night

we’d still forget the words to all those hymns

so we might as well leave now

before that thing they all seem to be dreading comes

Nobody thought to lock the door

or bar the windows

or even glance at the sky to see if anything had noticed them

We were gone, and the fields in bloom held us

long before our memory returned

until then catching only glimpses between the lines

etched on our skin and the world’s

What have you been thinking about lately?

  1. Thinking how commitments, what is right for others conflicts with desire, what is right for ourselves, and trying to settle the noise is sometimes all we can do. Great poem. I hope I find that field one day, lay there, gazing at the stars above, finally content.
