Pass through and you will see
the serpent’s fangs are bared
and venom drips slow and sure
into our mouths open to catch the falling rain
Even dead, the snake’s venom seeps into the river
and when we kneel to drink
our eyes see through the veil
so again and again we come to kneel
in hope that the prayers we cast away
might be answered by the bitter waters
