Venom

Pass through and you will see

the serpent’s fangs are bared

and venom drips slow and sure

into our mouths open to catch the falling rain

Even dead, the snake’s venom seeps into the river

and when we kneel to drink

our eyes see through the veil

so again and again we come to kneel

in hope that the prayers we cast away

might be answered by the bitter waters

I’m fairly certain the snake in that picture isn’t venomous, but you get the point. Happy September!
