On our descent the winds shifted
and hid the world we were returning to
under haze and smoke of distant fires
We walked along the spine of the world
down through tundra to the meadows below
and listened all the way to laughter in the trees
the voices of those hidden there
watching with us the ashes drifting down
and breathing in that acrid taste of stale heat
spent fury drifted on long winds to settle here
Some, like us, joined with the river flowing
down to places of forgotten dreams
chased away from outstretched fingers
at the first breath of morning

Got to spend the day hiking and driving through Rocky Mountain National Park. Absolutely one of the most breathtaking places I’ve ever been. I feel incredibly lucky to be able to see it. Gotta visit more National Parks!
