Salish Sea

The past is a fever dream

washing ashore with driftwood

carried on waves of the Salish sea

and where the cliffs are highest

memories fall furthest into meaningless depths

only to surface where sunlight strikes the waves

silent among watchful pines

closing in on every waking nightmare

with no one to witness

the soft power of breaking apart

thrown against skies already shattered

Do all landscapes hold the same sway over those who grow up knowing them?
