Markings in the Sand

From outside these walls absolution is a memory

And exaltation seems a thousand miles away

But I’ve seen the faces in the hall of deliverance

Longing for all they were promised

And returning always to wait for its arrival

Strange markings in the sand are the footsteps of spirits

And they’ve come to this tower on a high place

To stand and be not moved

With voices of song and glad suffering

Defiant to an end they cannot know

Hand in hand with the dead and dying

A people cling to what is known

And only smile at the flames beneath them

Already spreading across the floor to the altar

Tried to keep this from being too on the nose, but not sure if I was able to.
