A Whisper

I stood silent, listened

tried to figure out why you only ever whispered

and finally heard it:

the roars that drowned you out

so constant they faded away

You never whispered—you were screaming

but screaming was nothing new

and it wasn’t until the lions held their breath

hoping they’d done enough

that you wolves cast off your sheepskin cloaks

and bared your teeth against the pride

Finally your voices able to tear apart the sky

and this time all it took to shake the earth

was a whisper
