Lying in Wait

Lying in wait amid shadows cast by sleeping giants

together breathing in a rise and fall

as colors melt and swirl in the silver sky above

Time meanders onward, heedless of the journey

and here in this place the river overflows

spreading out into floodplains long in drought

a desert made fertile by the rushing waters

When the flood recedes the world will bloom

alive as nothing has ever lived before

reaching with newborn hands to the sun

before cut down by the ones who devour

The rest are left to wither and return to dust

on dry floodplains in the desert heat

watching the river wash slowly by

and waiting in thirst for the return of the flood
