Darling

Darling you knew this day would come

you signed your conviction on my sleeve

when you met my gaze and held it

Don’t look at me like that

I was nothing but honest with you

that night beneath the moon

when I said you would not be the last I ever loved

Now what is there left to do

when the words you put in my mouth

are returned bloodsoaked

and sharp

tasting of smoke

and bitter memory
