Night Wind

After the sun falls into the sea

it lingers in our skin, sand-scrubbed

raw with the heat slowly dissipating

as a night wind cools the fire

The waves dance beneath a veil

glittering with the reflection of stars

that herald yet another day’s death

out beyond the edge of the furthest swell

which hides from us all the days that came before

though here under stars we built ourselves

and awash in the warmth of fading flames

we aren’t looking for them anyway
